Crochet Shawl

Standard

Well, this week has been yet another week of procrastination on the uni work front (although I did manage 2 hours of almost solid journal research this afternoon!), but I have been at work and I have been working on some of my WIPs….. and starting some more. Which brings me to this post. I’m going through the phase where my friends are moving in with bfs/gfs/getting married/having kids, and next month is no exception. 2 of our good friends are getting married on the island (I’m so excited – I can get a bit tipsey, have a dance, and walk 5 mins down the road to bed without having to pay for a taxi or get on a ferry!!) and I’m going to be wearing the dress I wore as bridesmaid for one of my closest friend’s wedding in 2010, but it only has thin spaghetti straps and I don’t want to freeze/fork out a ton of money for a matching shawl/cardi, so I thought I’d make one. The yarn was a tad expensive, but as I usually work with cheapy acrylic, I don’t think the yarn is expensive for what it is (Debbie Bliss mohair/silk blend), especially when I found the cheapest seller I could on ebay (from artofyarn) – the idea was to keep it as cheap as possible, and I think just shy of £15 isn’t bad (I got 2 balls just in case – I shouldn’t need 3, but I’m naff with gauge!). I just googled crochet shawl patterns and this is what I got. I’m not one for following pattern recommendations so I’ve got no idea how it will turn out but this is it so far:

It’s just a snap shot, and it’s got bigger since I took that pic this morning, but it’s looking pretty good so far. This does mean that my CAL has taken a bit of a back seat (like 2 and a half weeks….), and the Xmas pressies are also ever so slightly on hold, but I feel this is a good way to procrastinate!!

Ta very much for stopping by 🙂

What Vicki Did (finally!)

Standard

Ok, so I did say last week that I was hoping to post more of what Vicki did over the weekend. Well, last weekend came and went at alarming speed! Finally managed now to sit down and post a couple of bits. The father-in-law (almost, still waiting for that ring!) and his gf descended on Monday (I will not go into detail – we rub along well enough I suppose), so this week has been a bit frantic. I had uni Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and I spent much of Thursday and Friday trying to get my head around my lecture notes. But my crafting has not suffered too much – because of the fact that the lovely Hannah Davis is drip-feeding the pattern to the fabulous blanket, I am able to keep up and not feel too guilty that I’m taking time out from my studies. This means I am still crocheting. However, I do have a few other Christmas WIPs to finish/start – I’m sort of taking this weekend off from uni work so some of it will get done. But as I am naught but a poor student, I do have to do some paid work to keep me ticking along (and away from the ‘in-laws’ so to speak!). I can’t post all of my progress so far for my sister’s pressie as occasionally I know she pops by to read my little blog, but I can post what I’m making for my mum (who is a complete technophobe and thinks a blog is some sort of weird Borg cross-breed!) when I start it (it’s the frog prince from Storyland Cross Stitch). I’m also hoping to make some of the buttons featured in the book. It really is fantastic, and it comes with enough even weave and thread to make a small project, which is fab! I’ve never used even weave before, but it looks like it will give a much more professional finish so I think it might be the way forward for me and cross stitch in the future.

So, here’s my CAL so far (haven’t quite caught up, I’ve got a bit of week 9 to finish the onto week 10):

and here’s the sneak preview of my sister’s pressie (sorry about the quality!):

My first CAL

Standard

I’m not a very active blogger in terms of posting (it’s been a few months….), but I do like to read blogs, and I found this little gem via hannahackroyd. I’ve never heard of a CAL before, so I was intrigued….. it’s fab for me now as I’ve just started my nurse training and I need something to relax with that won’t have me distracted for too long. This is perfect – I started a bit late, but I caught up today, and I cannot wait for next Saturday’s installment. Thank you so much Hannah (Davis) for this lovely project!
